TRADITIONAL CLEANINGS
For the better part of a century, we have spent 40 minutes, or more, of your appointment using a vibrating steel rods to remove all the tarter, calculus, stains, etc. we can find. Then, we follow with a metal pick on soft gums and sensitive roots again on all the teeth surfaces hoping we were able to get anything we missed the first time. Finally, we use flavored stone polish and potentially damage the surfaces of your teeth which we just addressed two prior times with aggressive tools. These are the steps for a traditional teeth cleaning. After all these years, there has to be a better way to clean teeth. I believe we are finally on a better path of this for our patients. A different and better way to clean teeth is now available at our office.
GUIDED BIOFILM THERAPY WITH EMS AIRFLOW
We now have a way of cleaning teeth which is not only much gentler, but focused on cleaning areas where the problems are visible. Most of the cleaning is treated more like power washing which can reach up to 4mm below the gum line. This allows us to use the sharp instruments in a more focused and guided fashion. We only need to use them on areas where there areas very hard calcified deposits on the teeth. We are no longer blasting aggressively areas at random. This is what GBT (Guided Biofilm Therapy) provides for our patients. A problem focused cleaning technique which gives us a visual ability to gently remove all we can with less trauma to the teeth and gums, while at the same time to be more confident the job is more thorough. After using GBT, we then use ultrasonics and hand instruments selectively to scale teeth in those areas. The EMS AirFlow and ultrasonics even uses warm water to avoid temperature sensitivity when being used. We now have a better way of helping patients maintain their gums health through this new technique. It is more efficient, it is kinder to your tissues, it causes less sensitivity, it is more focused on your problem areas, it allows patients to see what we see, and we can better customize your home care routine for you. GBT is our next step to providing a better patient experience in our chair.
